Fig 7.1The role

What you will be doing.

You will own backend services end to end: design, implementation, tests, deployment and the on-call that follows. Some of the work is greenfield on our own products; some is modernising Java estates for clients, module by module, behind the same interfaces. You will use AI coding tools daily and be expected to review their output with the same rigour as a colleague's.

    Design and build REST and event-driven services in Java 17+ and Spring Boot

  • 02

    Model data in Postgres or MySQL and write migrations you would be happy to run on production

  • 03

    Write unit, integration and contract tests, and keep CI green

  • 04

    Modernise legacy Java modules using the strangler pattern, with tests first

  • 05

    Profile and fix performance issues, and set up the observability to find them

  • 06

    Review code and prompts, mentor juniors, and demo your work every week

    Spring Boot, JPA or jOOQ, and a relational database you know well

    Testing as a habit, not a phase
